GARUDA WISNU KENCANA CULTURE PARK

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Culture Park situated on a limestone plateau in south Bali, high on the Bukit Peninsula, 300 meters above Balis shoreline. Offer a grand view of Jimbaran Bay and Kuta to the west, and Tanjung Benoa and Sanur to the east with the imposing Mount Agung and Mount Batur as its background. Focal point of this Cultural Park is the magnificent Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue that will reach a total height of 126 meters, weighing 3,000 tons, that will be taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Culture Park located in Jalan Raya Uluwatu, Ungasan village, South Kuta sub-district, Badung district. It's about 10–15 minutes driving from Ngurah Rai International Airport or about 15 to 20 minutes from Kuta, on the road from Jimbaran to Dreamland Beach, Uluwatu.

What to Expect at Garuda Wisnu Kencana Culture Park

A fascinating 60-hectare cultural park with stunning views of the island where one can enjoy cultural and cinematographic events. Performances, concerts, exhibitions and conferences, but also shopping and restaurants illuminate the sixty hectares that host the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (GWK) in Ungasan. A lively and stimulating park with panoramic views overlooking various parts of the island where visitors can learn about Balinese artistic and cultural traditions in all their forms and which is home to Indonesia’s tallest statue, Garuda Wisnu Kencana, symbol of Indonesian civilisation and an emblem of Bali.

Depicting the Hindu god Vishnu with his mosaic golden crown (kencana) riding the mythological bird Garuda, this incredible sculpture was designed in 1997 by Nyoman Nuarta, only to be finished in 2018 because of local controversy connected to the religious work being relegated to the mere scope of tourism. Reaching almost 121 metres in height and weighing 4000 tons, it is the largest monument on the island and the fourth largest in all the world. Organised tours allow visitors to admire the various statues and attractions within this immense park, such as Wisnu Plaza and the Indraloka Garden (honouring the God Indra), the enchanting Lotus Pond which hosts public and private events, such as fashion shows, gala dinners and concerts or where you can take in a Barong dance at the Street Theatre.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Culture Park History

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Culture Park construction project began in 1992 on 60 hectares of land, initiated by The Garuda Wisnu Kencana Foundation. The project aims to make GWK Bali the most iconic landmark in Bali and beyond. One of the founders of the GWK Foundation is I Nyoman Nuarta and he was the drafter and architect of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue. Finding the perfect location for such a large undertaking as the GWK culture park’s construction was not simple. After conceptualizing the project, the Foundation took two years to find an appropriate location for it. Prior to construction of GWK Cultural Park, the Ungasan hill in Bali was used as a limestone mining site, which was 146 meters above sea level or 263 meters above ground level.

Visiting Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park are subject to an entrance fee of IDR 125,000 per person.
